What are the racing categories, and how do I know which one to enter?

XC races are divided into categories based on racer ability, fitness, and experience. Certain categories are also divided by age group. We ask that you race your age as of 1/1/2019, but we probably won’t card you.

Free Kids’ Race: 12 years old and younger only.

Kids race will not last longer than 15 minutes. Faster kids may complete up to 3 laps of the course, younger kids may only complete one.

Kids must be able to pilot their bike on their own, though parents can run beside/behind if needed.

Kids who race the free kids’ race should not also race Beginner XC on the same night.

Beginner: Racers who are new to riding mountain bikes.

Course standards: 4 -6 miles; Less than 1000 ft climbing; 20-40 minutes race time

Experienced riders who are new to racing may be candidates for the Beginner category, but if the friends you ride with every week race Sport or Expert, you should consider at least racing Sport.

Riders who move up from the Free Kids’ Race must be able to complete the course without assistance. (A parent may ride behind a racer as long as there is not interference with any racer and the parent has signed all appropriate waivers).

Sport: Novice to experienced riders, racing to challenge yourself, not ready for Expert pace/distances (yet).

Course standards: 8-14 miles; 1000-2500 ft climbing; 50-80 minutes race time

New, fit riders; experienced riders new to racing; experienced riders who race to challenge themselves are candidates for sport class. Sport classes are our most popular!

Masters: Experienced riders with technical confidence and fitness who prefer to not mix it up with the larger Expert classes.

Course standards: 10-18 miles; 1000-3000 ft climbing; 45-60 minutes race time

You slay the sport class, you race to race, you really want to beat your friends. The pro riders are still much faster than you are.

Women’s Pro/Expert: Experienced riders with technical confidence and the need for more speed.

Course standards: 10-18 miles; 1000-3000 ft climbing; 45-60 minutes race time

You slay the sport class, you race to race, you really want to beat your friends. We’d love to see enough Expert and enough Pro women racing to split this category!

Expert: Experienced riders with technical confidence and the need for more speed.

Course standards: 10-18 miles; 1000-3000 ft climbing; 45-60 minutes race time

You slay the sport class, you race to race, you really want to beat your friends. The pro riders are still much faster than you are.

Pro: Crush racers in the Expert category and/or have a pro license in MTB, cross, or road.

Course standards: 10-18 miles; 1000-3000 ft climbing; 45-60 minutes race time

The fastest of the fast and getting faster.
